Business Operations Manager

We’re seeking a Business Operations Manager to manage day to day finance and accounting processes at Constellation.  Reporting to the Head of Business Operations, the ideal candidate will be skilled at financial analysis and forecasting, have generalist capabilities, and be excited to join a small, fast-paced, and flexible team.

Constellation is a nonprofit research center whose mission is to help the world navigate the development of transformative AI. We host and support researchers from nonprofit organizations, universities, companies, think tanks, and government. Our programs foster knowledge sharing and collaboration across the AI safety field.

We’re seeking a Business Operations Manager to manage day to day finance and accounting processes at Constellation.  Reporting to the Head of Business Operations, this person will manage and scale a team responsible for many of Constellation’s core operational functions.

The exact scope can be tuned to focus on particular areas of expertise, or to accommodate a generalist who thrives on variety.

Responsibilities

  • Manage financial close in conjunction with the Business Operations team and external accountants
  • Create forecasts and financial models for Constellation as a whole as well as new initiatives and programs
  • Work cross-functionally to help the Programs and Program Operations teams plan and make projects more efficient and higher-impact
  • Support other business operations projects as they come up. This may involve anything from vetting and negotiating vendor contracts to setting up a grantmaking system, and everything in between
  • Work with outsourced lawyers, HR specialists and other vendors on key projects that will affect Constellation’s growth and mitigate risks

You might be successful at this role if you:

  • Have 1-4 years of experience in nonprofit or startup business operations, finance, accounting, consulting, or another analytical field
  • Can create intuitive tools using Google Sheets and/or Excel
  • Are comfortable with ambiguity, quantifying difficult-to-quantify variables and explaining them to others
  • Can exercise thoughtful judgment between efficiency/accuracy tradeoffs, and are comfortable with making a model that is, for example, 90% accurate 3x faster than the 99% model, while not going so fast that the model ends up incomplete or unhelpful

Compensation

$85,000 - $120,000 a year

This is a full time, on-site role. We may be willing to sponsor visas for this role, though our ability to do so may depend on the circumstances. We would like the candidate to start as soon as possible after receiving an offer, though there is some flexibility.

Compensation will depend on experience, but will likely be $85,000-$120,000/year.  We offer catered lunches and dinners, 401(k) and cover PPO health, dental, and vision insurance.

Our office is in downtown Berkeley, CA, thirteen seconds from the nearest BART (metro) stop.
